Think God

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.” Philippians 3:14-15 ESV

The journey through life becomes more adventurous when one has purpose and meaning behind the people you meet, the circumstances you face, and the outcomes you seek. In hindsight, the people, places, and purposes all align into a pattern that help make you the person you are today and the person you will become tomorrow. Though in the beginning, each step is a movement of faith battling doubt.

For instance, we go to college selecting a major unsure where it will lead us. We marry the person who seems to be our soul mate yet are apprehensive whether or not it will last more than a few years. We accept a job offer on the other side of the country unsure whether or not the move will prove best for the future. With or without a game plan, we are tossed about by the circumstances of life.

When young, many of us learn that we can feed ourselves, cloth ourselves, make money, and relate with the opposite sex without God in our life. We blind ourselves in believing that everything is under our control because we know what we want and where we are going. Then something happens. We suffer loss. One of our life goals is taken away from us. It may happen because of a health crisis, a financial collapse, or an act by the government. Whatever the event, your life becomes empty. You grieve. You are angry. You are not sure which way to turn.

Then somewhere, someplace, somehow, you come into contact with the God of the universe. You begin to discover more about the Author of life through the Bible. You begin to realize how insignificant you are when compared to Him. Yet you also find out how much He loves you. That He has always been near you. At times He even intervene to help you even though you took the credit.

The more you begin to think on Him, you are drawn closer to know Him. You begin to see Him work in your life and in others. You begin to think God first when you meet a new person or restart a relationship with someone you haven’t met in awhile. You seek out God first in the circumstances and problems you are confronted with each day. Your thoughts are focused toward working with the Holy Spirit in the situation you are currently facing. God becomes more than an idea. He becomes real.

You begin to see how God has taken your journey through life and imprinted His character and values into your inner being. What seemed like a forty-year journey through the desert was really a discipleship mentoring process with your heavenly King. You have slowly learned how to think God first in every area of your life. Some people may have learned the process earlier and quicker. You are simply thankful God took the time to help you learn to think Him first.

You Too Can Bless God

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” Psalm 103:1 ESV

bless god1

In what way can a human bless the divine? How does the lesser bless the greater?  The inspired writer of Psalm 103 gives us the answer.

From the first verse to the last, he has nothing but praise for his Lord. He praises and gives honor to the Creator, Sustainer, and Savior of mankind. In every corner of life, he lifts up and acknowledges God. He expresses his gratitude for everything that is in his world. He holds in high respect God’s authority. He gives God all the credit for everything good in the world. His heart is with God.

So if you want to bless the Divine One, now you know how. Just practice the same as the writer of Psalm 103.

Stop It!

“O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.” Jeremiah 5:3 ESV.

Mr. Bob Newhart is a standup comedian and actor noted for his deadpan delivery. One memorable,  humorous routine involved him playing a psychologist providing services for $5 a session. His one-line response after listening to the patient’s problem was always the same: “stop it.” No matter the problem, the solution was simply for you to stop doing it. A simple reply that in many ways is funny because we humans like to make our personal problems seem larger and more difficult than the challenges of others.

Yet Bob Newhart’s response is actually the best advice we can implement. (This of course does not apply to conditions caused by physical or mental structural damages.) When the problem is caused by harmful behavioral or attitudinal responses, something needs to change. As long as we continue to respond in the same routine fashion, how do we realistically expect the results to be any different?

The challenging circumstances we face each day is the opportunity to lean more on the Triune God. As we lean more on God, we witness his grace in action. The process slowly changes our heart as we develop a trust walk with the Almighty. This change of heart the Bible denotes as repentance. It is changing how we think and respond to the world around us. Instead of centering the pain on our shoulders, or throwing the pain in the face of others, we learn to give the pain over to Jesus who helps carry us through the ordeal via the Holy Spirit.

So the next time to find yourself experiencing a negative outcome, review the process that got you there, and ask God for the strength to change it. In other words, stop responding in your old way and ask God to show you how you can respond differently. Ask Him for wisdom. Ask Him for more love and patience. Ask Him for whatever you need. Like a caring Father, He will gladly provide you with the help you need. Otherwise, if you don’t change, who are you going to become?
