Yellow Pencils

“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…Romans 12:3-6 ESV

What would life be like if everyone only wrote with a #2 yellow pencil? We probably would manage. However, what would happen if someone introduces you to a red pencil? a mechanical blue pencil? a typewriter? a computer? Which would you prefer?

One of the challenges of leadership is surrounding yourself with people who will compliment you. There are leaders who surround themselves only with people who are like themselves. In my time we called them “yes” people. They always would agree with leadership in public. But behind doors, they totally disagree with the leaders final decision. They act like they are 100% behind the decision, but passively rebel when the foot hits the cement.

On the other hand, there are leaders who surround themselves with all types of people who differ from themselves. Abraham Lincoln built his senior cabinet post surrounding himself with people of high abilities but whose allegiance would be questioned from the outside looking in. Yet he recognized that differences of opinion and personality and other attributes assisted him with reaching important decisions.

What does this have to do with yellow pencils and the church? Sometimes we in the church believe everyone should behave and act and look in a peculiar way. Like yellow pencils, we believe unity comes from conformity on the outside. Not realizing that Christian unity comes from the Spirit (Ephesians 4:3 ). Ever notice how ministers graduating from the same seminary behave and act similarly when preaching or teaching a course. They simple execute what they have learned. Like yellow pencils, they look and act accordingly.

Yet there are those who realize the purpose of a pencil is to have the ability to communicate through the written medium. The color of the pencil doesn’t matter. Whether it is a #2 or a #3 pencil doesn’t matter. What matters is that the message is communicated.

I for one am thankful that God created us all with a different personality, ethnic origin, and attributes. It adds flavor and color into the action. Yet for those whose preference is yellow pencils, I am also thankful that God created you. Without you I wouldn’t appreciate all the various differences that make up the Body of Christ.

PS: To this day I am a faithful, daily yellow pencil user in my work and writings. I also enjoy modern technology. Everything has a time, place, and purpose.

Entitlement

” …all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:15-17 ESV

entitlements 3

Where are we taught that the world owes us something?  That government, church, or business exists to satisfy our desires? What does life owe us besides our existence? Are we entitled  to fulfill all our dreams? These are some questions people may ask from the position of “what’s in it for me?”

Like a spoiled child, we believe all our desires and dreams should be instantly gratified.  When they are not, we become emotionally belligerent.  We turn our resentment against whomever has denied us our “rights.”  Whether it is our boss, mate, parent, government, and yes even God.  However, like a repented spoiled child, we learn over time to appreciate and be grateful for what we have. But for most of us, it takes time for the heart to morph into a channel of thankfulness.

One of life’s lessons we eventually come to realize is this world doesn’t exist solely for you and I. The Bible states that the world was created for Jesus Christ.  We are simply his invited stewards.

It is Jesus Christ who surrendered his eternal home on a mission for his Father. Faithfully and courageously he fought the battles of life to overcome Satan, Sin, and Death. He substituted His vicarious life for ours. He redeemed humanity from their initial rebellion against grace. His victory is humanity’s win. He earned the right for supreme leadership as King of all kings and Lord of all lords. He is earth’s and heaven’s ultimate Ruler and Judge.

So what are we entitled too?

How about the opportunity to live?  Even though the quality and quantity is limited by many outside factors beyond one’s control, born in a favorable family or government increases ones odds. However, there is no guarantees under the sun. The results of what we pursue and chase after may or may not occur. Only physical death (and some say taxes, but if you have no qualified income, taxes are legally avoidable) is absolute.  Therefore, the only thing we are truly entitled too is the opportunity to live and die.

Everything else is only because of God’s unmerited favor. In fact, because of God’s grace, those who have gladly chosen to accept his authority have the guarantee of the 1st resurrection.  Otherwise, all other perceived entitlements are simply desires that blind and rob us from a more intimate relationship with our Creator: whose blessings are more than enough to handle in this life.

God Speaks

“Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” John 8:47 ESV

speaks 3

How many different ways does God speak to us?

The Bible is the means that most evangelical Christians claim God speaks to us. This is true. Yet, is it the only way?

How about in prayer? (Psalms 66:19)
How about in our dreams? (Matthew 2:12)
How about through visions? (Luke 1:22)
How about through angels? ((John 20:12-13)
How about through other people? (Jeremiah 35:15)
How about through a burning bush? (Exodus 3:2)
How about through secular poetry? (Acts 17:22-31)
How about through creation? (Romans 1:20)

There are probably many other ways that don’t quickly come to mind. If you can add to the list, I would love to hear from you.

Bottom-line: don’t limit the way God speaks with you. He only wants an attentive, believing heart that makes himself or herself available to listen.
