Where Is Our Popularity Found?

popularity 1

How thankful are we (speaking about the majority of us) that our calling is not to be a politician? Imagine the challenges we take on to make decisions based on the popular vote of the people rather than our conscious.  How would that eat at your soul?

When we watch our young people battle their peers when it comes to making decisions, doesn’t it remind us of ourselves? How often would we come home and say, “But mom, everyone is doing it?” Or, “But mom, they can’t all be wrong.” How many times in our life was the battle comparing us with them? Us with they? or us with everyone else? Now they, them, and everyone didn’t have a specific name most of the time. They were just people who you would read about. Or they were associates who you wanted as friends and needed to perform in a proper manner (their manner) to be acceptable.

Is it not amazing that most of us discharge the “they” argument and throw popularity opinions in the garbage as we mature? At least we become more self-confident in our decisions and acceptable of ourselves as a person. This probably is more so when we become a disciple of His. When we accept Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and Friend, don’t we accept His “opinion” and outlook to what “is popular” and His commandments and principles? He becomes the standard. He becomes our Friend. He sets the stage for what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.

We now don’t have to take opinion polls, read the latest fashion magazines, or catch the latest commercial fad. We simple look in the Bible and pray for guidance. In doing so, we become more acceptable of others, and more tolerant of ourselves.  We don’t seek the popular answer; we seek the best answer for all. We look for a win-win answer. If we have difficulty in arriving at a decision, we approach the Throne of Wisdom and ask for assistance. We place character and morals ahead of expediency and popularity. We are at peace with ourselves and with our neighbors.  We are disciples of His and He is our popular vote. We live our life accordingly.

 Our Prayer

PRAY 8

Our #One Dad, thank you for calling us out of this world and revealing you to us. Thank you for sending us Jesus who you gave great favor and blessings while He resided on this planet. It is you who deserves all popularity.  It is you who deserves all fame. It is you who deserves all recognition.

Help us to live abundantly in the Body of Christ.Let your church exemplify your life of love, joy, and peace. Let the Spirit of Jesus be worshiped and honored and magnified throughout the churches, homes, and workplaces of your saints. Install a great desire in each of us to make you and your ways the popular lifestyle of the youth and parents every where.  Help us to magnify you and your life in everything we do.Amen.

What If We Just Show The Love?

4h 1

How much of your internal drive and motivation depends on the approval of others?  How much is driven by the love of God?

Ever spent time participating in 4-H events?  It seems like only yesterday, when we shared the entire day at the county fair with our daughter who was an active participant in 4H dog events.  Our family pet then was Rusty (a sheltie with the official name of Sir Rusty Knight).  He would grudgingly partake in three events each year which they have faithfully been practicing each week. The three events included dog obedience, showmanship, and agility.  As any Dad would admit, it’s a fatherly joy to witness the personal growth and development of your daughter in self-confidence and poise as she works with her pet in each event.  Each event is designed so that each handler and companion must attain enough points to qualify for the next level of competition the following year.  So even though awards of recognition are given each year for the top three finishers of each event and level, it is possible for all participants to win by qualifying for the next level.  In others words, you could place last and still win.

Anyway, this day there was the agility course.  Each dog had to be led by their handler through a maze of obstacles under a certain amount of time and under certain rules of behavior.  Over the years, we have witnessed dogs that have ran through the course in practice without any problems suddenly develop stubbornness and independence of will.  They will do whatever they want contrary to the instructions of their handler.  Sometimes it becomes so funny that the audience laughs at the situation. This day was no different.

Many of the dogs ran the obstacle course perfectly until half way through when suddenly, without warning they would turn and head right over the fenced area.  Therefore, they became disqualified. Or they would run through obstacles of their own choosing having major points deducted.  Through it all the audience would laugh but afterwards show their love and approval of the young handler’s efforts with applause.

This day though, there was a young lady, Mary, who was attempting the novice agility course for at least the sixth time. In the previous events, she didn’t qualify with a passing mark and therefore would have to retake the course until she met all the conditions of passing.  This day, she prevailed. When they passed out the awards for the top three finishers, she was not with them.  Instead, she received a ribbon for meeting the qualifications and succeeding at her efforts. The top three finishers received applause from the audience. No one applauded Mary.  After which, her mother, her friends, and people who knew stopped by to acknowledge her achievement.  She was beaming with accomplishment.  She didn’t need the applause.  She didn’t need the acknowledgement from others. Her greatest applause was from the inside out.  She was persistent and determined to handle her dog and pay whatever price to meet the qualifications of passing that course. And she did. Her joy was rewarded.

For us, Mary’s success is our success.  What she learned and gained through that experience will be with her for the rest of her life. The thrill of personal victory and accomplishment means more to her and her companion than for anyone else who won and competed that day. Memories of character development and sweet success will be with her forever.

Likewise for us, it’s an event that reminds us of our walk as disciples of His. We are comforted by the daily struggles and trials we go through that no one else knows but our Savior. But through tests, grace, and spiritual power our character is being changed and developed more and more like Christ’s.  In our spiritual successes we don’t need applause. We only need the thankful appreciation of our Holy Dad who gives us the sweet successes through the Power that He provides. We know when we succeed and we know when we fail.  We no longer need plaudits to motivate us to the kingdom. We are disciples of His equipped by the Holy Spirit to overcome any obstacle. Thank you, Jesus.

PS: Our daughter and Rusty qualified in all three events that they entered with the added benefit of finishing first in two events and third in the other. But more importantly, it brings us greater joy just to watch her grow in skill and personal character throughout the 4-H process.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 9

Our Gracious Dad, Our reward is in you and in Jesus.  Let your love always abound in us.  Whatever disappointments and so call failures come our way, always remind us that you are with us. That your love is greater than anything else that this world has to offer.  Shower your love always on us. Help us spray those around us with your love. In Jesus we thank you as we praise your name always. Amen.

Wanted: Promotion of the Heart, Mind, and Soul

business3

When you first start out in your business career, isn’t it natural to seek advancement opportunities in your field of endeavor?  Don’t you want to better yourself financially and be recognized for your abilities? If you work for a large organization, the opportunities are probably greater than a smaller organization.  In a small organization, typically the position you start is the one you will retire from unless someone leaves and you are fully qualified to take over their responsibilities.

Many of us choose to work for a smaller organization where your input is quickly recognized. Likewise, so are your mistakes. Our friends in larger companies would be on a fast track program where they would be promoted into a new position almost every two years. As one friend said, you never see the real outcome of your work because you have already moved into a new job with new opportunities. However, in a smaller company, you are in your position for a longer time period and witness the fruit of your labors. You see your successes and also your mistakes of the past. You have a greater opportunity to learn from your results as you actually see the outcome of your direct decisions. If you’re good, you will accordingly be rewarded.  If you are not good, than you will not last as your mistakes will uncover your real abilities.

As you work at the same position for a number of years, you become naturally very competent at it.  As a professional, you make it look so easy.  Of course, the work may become routine and boring.  However, it is also the greatest opportunity to put your work on overdrive and take the time to make a real difference in the lives of others around you.  Because you don’t have to concentrate as hard in performing your job, you are able to spend more time in building up the people around you. You have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those people who live in your world.  You begin to realize that you have a greater influence making changes that impact the lives of others right in the position that you are at.  You realize you don’t have to be in a higher position to have an impact in the life of others.  You can make it right where you are at without the additional burdens that a higher position would give you.

You find that you are becoming larger than your job. Your character outshines your position. Your actions speak louder than your responsibilities. You are not overburden by your responsibilities, but you are in control of your work.  This of course, allows you to spend more valuable time with your family and love ones. You find yourself the master of your job and not its slave.  You are in control.  You are not over-burden with pressure.  You handle the pressures and deadlines with grace.  You are able to challenge your energy in areas of greater importance. It is not that you wouldn’t take a promotion, it’s that you have no real desire. Your desire is to make a difference right now in your current position. You have more time to disciple because it takes less time to fulfill all your daily responsibilities.

No, we don’t need a job promotion to make a difference in this world.  We need a spiritual promotion; a promotion of the heart, mind, and soul.  That is the promotion we need every single day of our life.  With these promotions, we don’t need any other type of additional responsibilities.  With these promotions, we “can do all things through Jesus who strengthens us”, as Paul writes.

With additional gifts of the Spirit, we are equipped to better serve our brethren, to build up the church, and give the glory and honor to our Lord.  These are the  best promotions that come to His disciples.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 8

Our Dear Dad, promote us!  Raise us to your standards of living!  Change our heart, mind, and soul to be like yours!  Help us to focus outside our desires and see how we can help others to achieve real success in their lives.  You are our boss. Provide us with the opportunities to serve others as you serve us.  Bless others who come to know you through us.  Let your kingdom reign wherever we go.  Let your Spirit rule the land.  We thank you Jesus!
