The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed. Gen 39:23 ESV.
The story of Joseph is a classic of God working out his purpose through people. Even in prison, God’s favor was upon him. It is like whatever he touched turned out successful. Can you and I say that about all the ventures we were involved with?
When we pursue anything outside of God’s purpose, it seems we are left alone to deal with the struggles and obstacles. However, whenever we join God in something he wants to accomplish, it is like canoeing downriver with the wind behind you. All you have to do is drop your paddle in the water and steer. The current takes you past the rocks, crevices, and swirling waves toward your destination.
In hindsight, one sees the favor bestowed by God. But while navigating through the maze, we think we are brilliant and in perfect control of the entire event. That we are God’s gift to mankind. That everyone should be able to do this. Maybe we may even consider writing a book to share our superior knowledge of the matter. But then in hindsight, we acknowledge how self-centered, blind, and ignorant we were. We humbly come to the position where God is able to lead without resistance on our part.
When everything works out better than you expected, thank God. For we don’t know how much direct influence we had on the matter and how much of the outcome was the favor of God.
Much less whenever we have a decision, choice, or project to pursue, ask God first. Ask him what would he like to accomplish through this process. How can you magnify His Domain?
Don’t even ask Him to bless something just because you want it your way. Instead, offer it to him as a sacrifice to further his purpose. It most likely will not end up the way you want it to be. But will end up glorifying Him and furthering his purpose. And possibly you may even benefit from the process more than you expected.
For when God is involved, his favor covers the entire room. Yes, even when you are in prison.
