We Wait For Our Redeemer

patience 2

Again we ask, what. is our motivation for being a disciple of His? Is it the money, the status, or the immediate gratification of pleasure? Or is it something else? Would you believe it is possible to give, to serve. and to love others simply because the process is more satisfying than not?

The other day we witnessed a man cleaning up after church long past the end of the last service. He voluntarily gave his time to pickup because he recognized the person who was assigned the responsibility for that day was not in attendance and no one else step up to the plate. As we walked by, our face broke into a big smile. His reward was more than most people are willing to wait for. He knows that his good, heavenly Dad takes very good care of him and will reward him accordingly. His reward may come immediate. His reward may be delayed for years. Or, most likely, his reward awaits him in the eternal kingdom.

As disciples, our emphasis is not on rewards. The emphasis is on godliness. Does God give so He can receive a reward? Does God love the difficult person (which we all are most of time) for a reward? Does God intervene on behalf of our prayers so He can receive a reward? We think not. God’s motivation is not “what’s in it for me?” His motivation is outward. His motivation is to build us up to become like Him. Not for His eternal salvation, but for ours.

No, our reward is not the motivation that makes us a disciple of His. Whatever and however God wants to reward us is His business. Our reward is found in Him, having a personal relationship with Him, and trusting Him with our life. We are not a disciple of His for personal gain, but for God’s glory.  Only when all people make Him central in their lives, surrender everything under His domain, and serve Him with all their heart, mind, and soul, will we have a world of real peace, prosperity, and happiness for ALL.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 8

Our Loving Dad and Lord, we thank you for redeeming us, forgiving us, and closing your eyes to our wasteful living. Thank you for blessing us with a rich, abundant life in you. We long for that eternal time when our training is complete and we are like you in every way. Until then, we thank you, praise you, and glorify you before all.

Help our motivation always to be pure in your presence. If there is anything that needs to change, be merciful with us and make the appropriate changes in our life. Let this life not be in vain, but let it shine for your glory.  We await our reward with you in heaven. Until then, provide for our needs as you see fit.  Thank you, Jesus.

Yours In Christ,

No Recognition; No Congratulations; No Comfort; No Complaint

How much does it bother us not to be recognized for our contributions and service to others? How much does it bother us not to be recognized for our worth as a person and individual? How much does it bother us not to receive the respect due us as a person of accomplishment and __________ (you fill in the blank)?

We all have different degrees or levels of human emotions that we deal with in our everyday life. We have different levels of pride, self-importance, and self-respect. We all have them and they all come alive somewhere, someplace, somehow when we least expect it. The question is how do we handle them when they do come alive?

We marvel to this day how God has taken some saints and worked with them to a point where they can serve, give of themselves unselfishly, for no personal gain, in love, without any fanfare or notice, for the glory of God. It is truly a gift from Him.  Most of the time, we believe we are there. But when those days come that brings out the worst of us, we are disappointed what comes out of us and find ourselves back praying to God in repentance and for comfort.  In times such as this, we have  to remember that we are all members of the same team. Like a sports team made up of fifty-three players, we may be the fifty-third and rarely used, but when the moment comes for us to perform, we better do our job or else the team suffers. Likewise, we remind ourselves that though we may be the least of many saints, when our moment of truth comes, we better handle the situation like Jesus did, or we may find ourselves disappointed again for not living up to our expectations as a Christ-follower. In which case, we go back to our Dad and ask Him to help us lower our expectations of ourselves or create in us a new heart with His Spirit and Power. Life is a short-term learning session on how to become like Him.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 21

Our Awesome Dad, continue to change our heart Dad, and help us look to you for our rewards and life’s pleasant surprises. Always be the center of our life. No matter what happens, always reassure us that you are with us. Help us deal with our unbelief, our unrealistic view of ourselves, and the expectations we place on ourselves.

Let your mercy and faithfulness surround us. Create in us a heart like yours.  Amen.

Let’s Praise the Creator, Not the Created

What feeds our internal motivational drive? Is it the comments, feedback, or applause from others? Is it the acknowledgement from our parents or other family members? Is it the acceptance of our working peers, next door neighbors, or community sponsors?

One of the hardest lessons we have to learn from life is to separate our value as a person from our economic value. Typically, it isn’t until our mid-30s that we come to understand that our worth as a person is not measured by personal achievements or people’s applause. Yes, our economic value is proportionally measured by how well we accomplished goals and objectives that fiscally benefited others. However, our value as a person is separate from our value as a capitalist. To paraphrase Jesus, one’s life is not measured by the abundance of one’s possessions. It is more than that. Yes, one needs physical comforts. But. real life is measure by the abundance of God’s spirit living in us and through us. Real life is a channel of love, joy, peace, goodness, self-control, faithfulness and everything else that defines God. We as a people want the physical benefits from God without the internal character of God. We take shortcuts in life so we can enjoy eating the apple pie without having to take the time to prepare and make it with real, natural ingredients.

As a disciple of His our praise goes to Him and our satisfaction is receiving feedback from Him. Specifically, that we are a faithful servant. We now know that every innate ability, every opportunity to excel, every skill developed, every challenge conquered, every goal achieved, every creative plan presented, every source of financial or human resource obtained, everything comes about only because He ultimately provides it; and allows us to use it. This is His grace showered upon us.  Therefore, every praise or glory now goes to the Creator and not the Created. Today, every time praises are directed in our direction, we gladly point to Him; to our Dad, our Lord, and our Comforter. It is He who deserve all the praises and glory. We are only doing what a servant is required to do. Our master is the brains, the power, and the wealth behind our success. We now know it and acknowledge it.

The praises belong to God. They don’t motivate us any longer.  Instead, we find them to be a deterrent in our walk with Jesus. They take our focus away from Jesus and place them back on us. We would rather keep our focus on Jesus. You can call it escapism. But escapism with Jesus is the best place we have found in this life. Praise Lord Jesus!

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 8

Our Creator Dad, everything is yours! You own the earth and everything on it. You own space and everything in it. You own time and everything that exists through it. You own the universe and every galaxy, planet, and star that inhabits it. You own it all!

Everything is yours! The talents and gifts you bestow upon us come from you. The relationships in our life are people that you created. The opportunities you give us to work come from you. The love. joy, and peace in our life come from you. You own it all!

Everything is yours! The material we use to build our homes, cars, and clothes. The water we drink and the air we breathe. The imagination and creativeness of our minds is your masterpiece. You own it all.

Everything is yours! The music we sing. The books we write. The scientific truths we discover. Everything comes from you and glorifies you.  You deserve all praise and glory and honor for now and evermore! Amen. Amen.
