Being With Jesus

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15

Being a disciple of Jesus is a lifelong adventure. Like any learning role, it begins as a student/teacher relationship. The rabbi has selected his students and now the lessons begin. Unlike today’s schooling, the Jewish rabbi of the first century operated differently. He would meet outside the classroom and teach through life’s everyday routines. Jesus was no different in that format.

Most rabbis had a high academic bar for selecting their students. They would not allow you to sit with them unless you met their standard. In the first century, this meant you had to repeat per verbatim from memory the entire first five books of the Bible. It is estimated that only one out of every ten thousand would qualify. Jesus’ selection process was somewhat different. He didn’t select his students based on their mental acumen or elite status. He invited all to follow HIM if they wanted to learn. But it was from this disciple group HE selected twelve for more intense training. They became the apostles. And HE specifically chose them only after conversing with HIS Father.

Unlike today’s academic setting, the student’s training was both academic and hands-on. They listened at the feet of their teacher, and didn’t have to take academic tests. Instead, they went on missionary field trips. There they put into practice the Lord’s teachings and saw the fruit of their efforts. It was all hands-on. In a sense it was a small group master-level training class.

They became known as apostles because the twelve learned directly from Jesus. They then replicated the process. They also selected students who they would pass on their learning. Thus, we have our early church fathers who learned from the apostle’s feet. They then continue to replicate the process.

What made this process so effective was the emphasis on relationship over task – being over doing. Jesus himself would emphasize his relationship with HIS father. He then showed the strength of that relationship through the good works HE performed. Though HE would share the knowledge of God’s Kingdom with them, HIS focus was always on the heart of the issue. HIS last prayer emphasized the intimate relationship between HIM, HIS Father, and disciples. In today’s Scripture, HE again emphasized the relationship with them. Not as teacher/student, master/servant, boss/employee, but as friend/friend.

The three-plus-years-experience of the disciples with Jesus is a great lesson of discipleship. They realize being with Jesus was more rewarding than the work one does for Jesus. That wherever one goes, Jesus is already there, because HE is always with you. As one practices the way of discipleship, one learns to live with Jesus rather than just do work for Jesus. The joy of living is greater when one shares the time and space, and process with Jesus. And allow HIM to share HIMSELF with you.

The apostles were happiest being with Jesus wherever they went. They marveled at HIS work, HIS words, HIS actions. They couldn’t get enough of HIM. They wanted HIM as their friend; but hesitated because of the Rabbi/Learner role they shared. But this night, Jesus broke down the wall, and called them friends.

As disciples we will go through a similar process. HE will always be the Rabbi. We will always be the student. But one day, HE and you will both become friends. Welcome to being with Jesus.

Learn. Integrate. Grow.

Revelation 5:10 (ESV)

…and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
(ESV)

Life is a learning process preparing one for an eternal position in God’s family business, the Kingdom of God.

As we learn to serve others from a heart of love, and exercise leadership to govern ourselves and others in the Triune God’s way of freedom, flourishment, and fulfillment, we slowly integrate HIS attitude, values, and character into our inner being and soul.

Like a small mustard seed with proper watering, sunshine, and nourishment grows up into a large tree, Christ-followers mature into the image of their Lord and Teacher.

As apprentices of our Great Rabbi, we study, observe, and mimic what we see to become more and more like HIM. Every situation, challenge, and opportunity life throw’s us is a learning step. Whether we immediately overcome or suffer a temporary setback, lessons are gleamed and integrated into our inner being to prepare us for the next challenge.

Like a two-year old learning to walk, we may fall multiple times, but each time stand right back up and proceed to keep moving forward. The joy of growing and experiencing more of who we are and what we can do is greater than the short-term pain of the moment.

We focus more on the process than the outcome realizing God will generate the spiritual growth within us. We may grow 30%, 60%, or even 100% more than when we first started our journey, but also recognize and acknowledge the fruit is God’s actions and not ours. Yet we also know our efforts demonstrate our willingness to walk with our Creator and will eventually form the habits built upon HIS godly character which leads to a more productive and viable life.

To take what we learn from life’s experiences each and every day and integrate those lessons into our inner soul and being, lays the foundation to maximize our potential for good work on God’s behalf and for the sake of others. How much we grow from the overall experience is an open door only God knows for sure. Our role is to make ourselves available and apply ourselves at the task at hand.

Most of the work will be joyous because you are building on your internal gifts God has bestowed upon you. Yet some of the work will be outside of your giftedness. In which case, it may be a challenge and burden. However, because you know you are being prepared for eternity, you accept the task at hand as part of the learning curve. Before you know it, you have mastered the lesson at hand and moved on to the next assignment. One day you will look back and realize your current success was due to the lessons learned during that ordeal.

God wastes nothing. In every situation you encounter, God is producing something in you which will eventually bloom and become known to you. You may have to wait years before you realize what the lesson was all about, or maybe even when you cross over into the next age, as hindsight is always 20/20.

But as Revelation reveals, God has made us to be priests (to minister) and to reign (leaders) in his eternal Kingdom. “Have made them” means God is currently training and preparing us for these roles. Or as I stated in the first sentence, life is a learning process preparing you & I for an eternal position in God’s family business – HIS Kingdom.

So, accept every day as a new day to learn something new, find ways to integrate the lessons into your daily life, and watch how the Holy Spirit manifest’s HIMSELF in you laying the foundation and growing HIS fruit through you. There is more going on than you and I realize each and every moment. Grasp at what you can and watch what and how God produces one of HIS masterpieces in you and in others.

Knowledge

knowledge 1

Today we work in the age of the knowledge industry. History records the agricultural, industrial, and technological periods have come, are still with us, but are not the leading industry at this time. The industry that leads today is in the knowledge arena.

Those who know are paid for what they know, not what they actually do. Those who know how to best interpret the information at their disposal and make it applicable are the leaders of their industry.

As an apprentice of Jesus Christ, we are likewise to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). Though most of us in the business arena understand the importance of gaining head knowledge of our industry and products, the truly successful entrepreneurs also realize the importance of growing in heart knowledge.

As Jesus’ apprentices, we are instructed to acquire knowledge that will transform our thinking and worldview (Romans 12:2). Likewise, as we abide in Christ, our hearts are being renovated into the image of our Chief Mentor (2 Corinthians 3:18). This basically comes via the Spirit as we walk through the challenges of life.

Most of us either have a bias to pursue one or the other. We either invest time to acquire head knowledge or emphasize heart knowledge. The fact is we need both. As the book of 2 Peter outlines, we are to grow in the grace & knowledge of Jesus Christ. Grace is a byproduct of experiencing the work of the Spirit in our life. Knowledge is coming to know Jesus Christ from a relational perspective which includes both the head and heart.

So no matter your natural preference, realize we need both. As we pursue both, we place ourselves in the position to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
