Being With Jesus

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15

Being a disciple of Jesus is a lifelong adventure. Like any learning role, it begins as a student/teacher relationship. The rabbi has selected his students and now the lessons begin. Unlike today’s schooling, the Jewish rabbi of the first century operated differently. He would meet outside the classroom and teach through life’s everyday routines. Jesus was no different in that format.

Most rabbis had a high academic bar for selecting their students. They would not allow you to sit with them unless you met their standard. In the first century, this meant you had to repeat per verbatim from memory the entire first five books of the Bible. It is estimated that only one out of every ten thousand would qualify. Jesus’ selection process was somewhat different. He didn’t select his students based on their mental acumen or elite status. He invited all to follow HIM if they wanted to learn. But it was from this disciple group HE selected twelve for more intense training. They became the apostles. And HE specifically chose them only after conversing with HIS Father.

Unlike today’s academic setting, the student’s training was both academic and hands-on. They listened at the feet of their teacher, and didn’t have to take academic tests. Instead, they went on missionary field trips. There they put into practice the Lord’s teachings and saw the fruit of their efforts. It was all hands-on. In a sense it was a small group master-level training class.

They became known as apostles because the twelve learned directly from Jesus. They then replicated the process. They also selected students who they would pass on their learning. Thus, we have our early church fathers who learned from the apostle’s feet. They then continue to replicate the process.

What made this process so effective was the emphasis on relationship over task – being over doing. Jesus himself would emphasize his relationship with HIS father. He then showed the strength of that relationship through the good works HE performed. Though HE would share the knowledge of God’s Kingdom with them, HIS focus was always on the heart of the issue. HIS last prayer emphasized the intimate relationship between HIM, HIS Father, and disciples. In today’s Scripture, HE again emphasized the relationship with them. Not as teacher/student, master/servant, boss/employee, but as friend/friend.

The three-plus-years-experience of the disciples with Jesus is a great lesson of discipleship. They realize being with Jesus was more rewarding than the work one does for Jesus. That wherever one goes, Jesus is already there, because HE is always with you. As one practices the way of discipleship, one learns to live with Jesus rather than just do work for Jesus. The joy of living is greater when one shares the time and space, and process with Jesus. And allow HIM to share HIMSELF with you.

The apostles were happiest being with Jesus wherever they went. They marveled at HIS work, HIS words, HIS actions. They couldn’t get enough of HIM. They wanted HIM as their friend; but hesitated because of the Rabbi/Learner role they shared. But this night, Jesus broke down the wall, and called them friends.

As disciples we will go through a similar process. HE will always be the Rabbi. We will always be the student. But one day, HE and you will both become friends. Welcome to being with Jesus.

Intentionally Focused

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

When you first wake up in the morning, are you prep to go with a game plan or simply hang about until something happens?

Do you have a structured priority list of objectives you aim toward or simply go with the flow of others?

Do you already know how you will invest your time for the day or will respond subject to the care of others?

Either you are pursuing your dreams or living the dreams of others is how one writer stated the obvious. Now you may be focused on your dreams while also living out the dreams of others. This is the best way. But if you are solely living out their dream and not yours, you will find yourself one day disappointed.

Paul writes to remind us that as Christ-followers we are to be intentional knowing what the will of the Lord is. That without intentional purpose, evil may win the day. That the best way is to be wise how you invest the time you are responsible for today.

This doesn’t mean you need to deprive yourself of your daily joys. But it does mean you need to understand God’s will for the moment you are living. God wants you to be the person you are wired to be. HE created you to be so. But HE gives us boundaries to practice our ways within the space of HIS character.

This is why we invite HIM to participate in our daily work and play for the day. HE adds that unique Spirit into the mix. HIS wisdom is second to none. HIS attitude, creativity, and joy spark a room. The more you lean on HIM, the more you come to know HIM. The more you seek HIS advice and recommendations, the stronger your relationship becomes. Plus, the outcome adds love and adventure into the mix.

Yes, we all have 1,440 minutes per day. HE allows us to live our dreams and enjoys sharing HIS presence with us. As we learn to be intentional each day with HIM, HIS character rubs off on us. The more we reflect HIM before others, the more our witness of HIS ways shine before others. Before long, others will want what you have. That gives you another opportunity to share the good news of Jesus. Yes, we first share the gospel in our actions. Then when necessary, we use words.

It all starts when we are intentionally focused on our relationship with Father-Son-Spirit.

Home with Jesus

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. John 14:23
___
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on[a] we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5
___

Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16

Jesus gives us two homes to share life with HIM. The first is our earthly body. The second is our heavenly abode. Whether on earth or in heaven, we are at home with Jesus.

As our physical body wears out, we look forward to our eternal home. Until then, we care and govern our bodies.

Paul writes that our bodies are God’s temple. God’s Spirit resides in us.  Father God and Jesus Christ share their life with us via the Holy Spirit that lives in us. At the same time, we share our life with the Triune God. There is a mutual bond and relationship.

The more we spend time together, the greater the bond grows. The more we share our interests and discover each other, the deeper our love grows. Though God’s love for us is more than we can even fathom. It is our love for HIM that blossom.

As we share life together, we grow to worship HIM. We learn and teach HIS ways to others. We magnify HIS Kingdom ways. We gladly sacrifice our ways for the greater good of HIS purpose.

Yes, home is wherever Jesus abides. Today, HE lives in you and me. HE also lives in heaven. One day when earth and heaven are merged together in the new age, then our permanent home with Jesus will be in place. Until then, we are humbled and honored to have HIS Spirit share space with our spirit in this tent called the body.

Meanwhile, do enjoy this Easter season and be grateful for everything Jesus has done for you.
