From Physical Difficulties Come Spiritual Masterpieces

masterpiece 3

When we initially surrendered to God and began the journey with Him, many of us believed that all of the world’s successes and possessions were ours to attain.  We believed we were going to live on easy street.  Everything thereafter that we touched was going to turn to gold.  And why not?  God is on our side.  But reality soon appeared.  Somewhere in time we come to the realization that life is a series of problems that need to be resolved.  Every day brings new difficulties, challenges, and yes, opportunities. And one needs to learn how to handle them wisely, with patience, or they will come back to haunt us for the rest of our earthly life.

In our early walk with God we hopefully learned that not all opportunities of material gain are blessings from Him.  Many times they are only tests to measure our faithfulness, values, priorities, and character.  We recall one instance where a friend had the opportunity to purchase a business. He prayed, counseled, fasted and searched for the “right” answer. Finally, based on the physical events in his life it looked like the answer was to go for it. He did.  Three years later showed him that physically it was a dumb thing to do.  But spiritually, it taught him many valuable lessons of life that are with him to this day.  One such lesson is that from physical difficulties come spiritual masterpieces.

Physically he lost everything.  But spiritually, God was creating a masterpiece.  It was through this ordeal that he discovered joy in tribulation.  He discovered patience in overcoming obstacles.  He discovered peace in confrontation.  And most importantly, he discovered love at the bottom of the pits.  In other words, he discovered all of life’s greatest values while he was being kicked, abused, defeated, and ostracized.  Human pride was being displaced with humility.  Selfishness was being revealed.  Arrogance was being chopped down in size.  Vanity was being deflated.  The Holy Spirit was attaining His objectives while he was busy pursuing other things that he thought was more important.  The spiritual project being created in us is His work.  And it seems that He does His best work while we are going through the rough times of our lives.

Yes, we know that being a disciple of His places us on a road least traveled.  It may be a road without all the physical comforts that we in America are accustomed with living.  But the process has its rewards.  Likewise, the end result has a reward.  To other eyes, the road may be rough.  But as disciples, the road is that one, spiritual Olympic journey for the gold.  The process may look tough, but the reward now and for eternity is worth the challenge.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 8

Our Great, Creator Dad, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your masterpiece under construction.  And a special thank you for caring and loving us even when our attitude and feelings are against you.  Forgive us.

Help us to always trust you, especially when the circumstances and times are difficult.  Help us to focus our attention and desire in you.  Lead us to your heavenly calling and help us to understand our part in your creation.  We pray for the strength, courage. and conviction to glorify you in all our undertakings.

No matter what the outcome, no matter what the events, no matter what the circumstances, let our heart, mind, and soul always praise you and trust you for the end result.  Help us to focus our eyes towards you and not our surroundings.  Take care of us as you do in mercy, compassion, and goodness.  Help us likewise treat others as you treat us.  Thank you, Jesus.

The Flinch Test

flinch 1

Ever take the flinch test?  Within the world of information gathering, there is a test to determine when to quit asking questions.  The bottom line is one keeps asking information until the person begins to flinch.  When they begin to flinch, than you know you have enough information.  The same holds true as a Christ-follower.

How often have we been asked to sacrifice before we begin to flinch?  What is that one item that we will protect to the very end?  That until everything else is gone, that one item is all we have left because it is the hardest thing for us to give up?

For many of us it is time.  For many, it is the most precious commodity in their possession.  Everything else could easily be given away with the expectation of earning it back.  However, time, when given away, is gone forever.  It is never recouped.  Though intellectually  we understand that eternity is waiting for us, the reality in this physical life is now.  Now we see, touch, and feel, but eternity is faith in the future after our departure.

Yet, eventually we have come to learn over our life that even time is not our possession any longer.  It belongs to our Lord and Master who redeemed us.  We are only its steward.  He has first priority on it.   We have come to learn that He loves us and wants us to enjoy and redeem our time probably more than we do.  This is the lesson we all have to learn.  We’ve learned it about money.  The more one gives without expecting anything in return, the more one receive.  And the more one receives, the more one gives again. The cycle continues in every area of our lives. We just need to learn to trust the Almighty Giver without putting boundaries on His giving.  If we expect little, He will give us little.  If we expect greatness, He will give us greatness.  Yet, it is all in His due time.

For many of us born in America as baby boomers, sacrifice is not one of those characteristics we learned while watching television or playing with friends.  Instead, it is one of those characteristics that Jesus teaches us through life.  It begins with the little things in life.  For example, the parent giving up their hobby to spend time with her children playing what they want to play and not what she wants to play.  It’s reducing the number of times you eat out each month and donating the money to a worthwhile mission that makes a difference in people’s lives.  It’s driving a less comfortable car than one could really afford and saving the difference for a college education to a young person that otherwise couldn’t afford it without your assistance.  It’s to stop complaining that you can’t afford to feed two children and find ways to sponsor two more children in another undeveloped country.  It’s learning to do without so others could have something instead.

The greatest sacrifice is giving up your life for another.  Jesus did.  And He struggled in prayer trying to escape from it, but in the end He surrendered Himself to His Dad’s plan and desires.  He struggled with His ultimate sacrifice.  Which means, so will we.  But we don’t know too many people who have struggled unto death.

We may more easily understand how some people over history have given everything they own to charity and moved into a monastery.  Though initially many think their sacrifice is great, they soon come to realize the greatest sacrifice is not giving up one’s possessions, but what one is.  To give up one’s possessions is only step one of real sacrifice. And if one struggles with that, than we need to pray more for the changing power of the Holy Spirit in our life.  The real sacrifice is changing oneself.  It’s when one comes to total surrender to our Master Potter in every area of our life.  Than sweet surrender turns into sweet living.  When the Master Potter changes our heart, all our possessions become a burden.  One looks forward to redirecting their ownership to someone else who could benefit from their use.  One does not want to be tied down with material goods.  One soon learns that the more one owns, the more owns you.  Our only Master is our Lord, not everything that one possesses.  When our Master is Lord, everything in our possession is for Him to use as He instructs.  The only time one will find oneself flinching thereafter, is when He shows us that there are possessions that we have not totally surrendered to Him. Then we will have to deal with it.  As His disciples, we are still flinching at times.  But those flinches have become less and less of an ordeal in our lives.  We know that sacrifice is what Jesus lived.  And Jesus is our role model and hero.  Our sacrifice cannot ever compare with His.  But maybe He will allow us the privilege to experience the after effects that sacrifice brings to everyone it touches.  The same way His sacrifice touched our lives.

OUR PRAYER

PRAY 21

Our Awesome Unflinching Dad, thank you for revealing your precious ways of life. Thank you for opening up our heart and learning the inner joy of sacrificing for others and Jesus did for us.

Help us to be a master servant.  Help us to serve others for their benefit, their needs, and their respect.  Help us to serve each person as we would serve you.  You are our glory, honor, and hero.  Let us be like you.  Thank you as we pray in Jesus name.  Amen.

Ever Try Thinking For Yourself?

thinkingbible 2

How well do we know our Bible?

After a certain number of years, we quickly understand why people who study the Bible and look at the Christian churches are confused. It’s easy to see the hypocrisy between what a Christ-Follower is to be like compared to a secular Christian.

When Martin Luther asserted the scriptures to the Catholic Church during the Reformation, he was only clarifying what the Universal Church believes versus what people have come to know through human appeal. The gospel of Jesus, the good news of the kingdom of God, and the message throughout scripture is a message of hope in a simplistic manner. For example, the message of salvation is through Jesus Christ. As Martin Luther demonstrated, salvation cannot be earned but is a gift from God. We as a people may read it in scriptures. We as a people may even understand it. But, do we as a people live it? It amazes many of us how so many denominations take such a simple message and add onto it. It’s almost like now the message is “Jesus Plus”. That is “Jesus Plus” how well one keeps the commandments. Or it’s “Jesus Plus” how much one serves. Or it’s “Jesus Plus” how much one attends church on a regular basis. Or it’s “Jesus Plus” how much money one donates. Or it’s “Jesus Plus” which church one attends. The list is endless.

So how well do we know our Bible?

Everything we need to know regarding salvation is easily understood from scriptures. The scriptures are clearly explained and repeated throughout the New Testament by various writers. On the other hand, there are scriptures that are not so clear. These are the scriptures where people have disagreed over the ages and new denominations are built because of it. But the simple truth is that if these issues where important for salvation, wouldn’t our loving Dad have clearly explained them to us. But no, He has allowed us to disagree, argue, and build walls over issues that are not important. Why? We don’t really know but wonder if He is trying to teach us how to live with the differences of people.  It’s easier to love someone who totally agrees with you on every issue. But, is it not harder when you disagree with a person’s opinion? And really, many of the differences are nothing more than people’s opinions on the interpretation of scriptures. We argue over these issues like salvation is really the result of a correct answer. Don’t be deluded.

Again, how well do we know our Bible?

The next time we read the Bible through its entirety, mark down all the scriptures that pertain to salvation. Keep these in front of you and never let any person or power take away your crown. Don’t let people tell you what scriptures are important. You read it and you with the Holy Spirit determine what scriptures you are willing to die for. Your eternity is at stake. Don’t be deluded. Don’t be captured by the delusions of others. You have the ability to determine yourself. Think for yourself. You have been given a wonderful mind, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit to lead you into all the Truth. Remember always to A.S.K: Ask Him, Seek Him, Keep Knocking, and He will lead you. Don’t be deluded.

Again we ask.  How well do we know our Bible?

OUR PRAYER

PRAYER 1

Our Great Heavenly Dad, thank you for your supreme gift of salvation and the Bible.  Help us to study it. Help us to learn from it. Help us to develop a deeper, closer relationship with you through it. Help us to understand what you consider important and live our life accordingly. Let no one delude us or mislead us in your Word. But open our mind to understand your mind, open our eyes to see through your eyes, open our heart to feel with your heart. This is what we ask great Dad.  Amen.
